A partner with Ravindran Associates in Singapore and Jasdev Chambers in Malaysia, Sukumar Karuppiah (Sugu) who is admitted to practice before both the Singapore and Malaysian Bars practices concurrently in both jurisdictions in the field of intellectual property (IP). This has been a great advantage to clients whom he represents in both countries.
Sugu represents both domestic and international clients in non-contentious and contentious IP matters, covering a range of industries such as luxury, fashion, consumer goods, electronics, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals and entertainment given his wide and diverse experience in IP for over 28 years. He assists clients in the development, protection, exploitation and enforcement of their IP rights, including copyright, trademarks, patents, designs, data protection and trade secrets.
Sugu is well regarded for various contentious matters he has handled for clients in both jurisdictions. He represents clients before the High Court as well as the Court of Appeal in Singapore and the High Court in Malaysia. Some of the cases he has handled includes trademark and copyright infringement, passing off, invalidation of trademarks are reported in the law reports, with a few being landmark ones.
He also represents clients frequently in opposition and invalidation matters and has successfully opposed and invalidated several trademarks.
He is a member of the International Trade Mark Association (INTA), Asian Patent Attorneys Association (APPA) and APAA Singapore Group and a member of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators. He is a registered patent agent in Singapore besides being a registered trademark and design agent in Malaysia.
He is a co-contributor to the chapters on Singapore and Malaysia in Intellectual Property Protection in Asia published by LexisNexis and edited by Arthur Wineburg and E-Discovery and Data Protection published by Kluwer Law International BV and edited by Catrian Noorda & Stefan Hanloser.
